Revised Article Summary

The article summarizes the chemistry club at John Tyler community College. Much like the TCU Chemistry Club it involves green chemistry by teaming up with the Virginia section of the American Chemical society to celebrate Earth day.

For Earth day, the club set up an event that displayed water and its impact on the world. Children and adults did many activities: collecting dirty water then used a filtration system to clean it, seeing the difficulties of cleaning an oil spill, learning about the breakdown of oil via fungi or bacteria, figuring out the difference between biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances that end up in landfills, seeing how aquatic pollutants seep into the soil, meeting a paleontologist, seeing dinosaur remains found in the US, and making a beach in a bottle to learn the process of erosion and how ocean waves and currents work.

Power analysis

Power analysis:

  • How can my community grow?

    • The community can grow by further reaching out to people around campus as well as making new connections for service hours

  • How does it help?

    • It helps minimize the stress, which is a big issue in society, of pre-med students by going through chemistry in a goofy manner and setting up fun activities in Sid Richardson.

  • How does it restrict others?

    • It always has specific times it meets and specific times for volunteer hours, which do not always map up with people’s class schedules
